The ForestWatch service developed by LUP offers continuous, nationwide monitoring of the vitality impairment of forests in Germany. It is based on Sentinel-2 satellite time series at a high spatial resolution (10 metres).
The service provides information on the condition of the forest, such as the proportion of deadwood or open areas that have developed. This information is particularly valuable in the context of climate change, as forests are central elements and can suffer considerable (consequential) damage during weakening phases such as droughts or storms, which may lead to subsequent insect infestation.
The target groups for this service include forestry and nature conservation professionals in order to enable more effective forest management through improved monitoring. Additionally, the platform aims to allow non-specialist users, such as private forest owners, to gain insights in an accessible manner.
