Wilderness and Protected Areas

Areas with natural self-regulation are essential for biodiversity and greater resilience to climate change. In the interests of natural climate protection, habitats and their interconnectedness are safeguarded by designating protected areas.

The EU Biodiversity Strategy aims to protect ten per cent of Europe’s land and marine areas by 2030. In addition to areas that depend on use, such as extensive grasslands, wilderness areas, i.e. areas with free development potential, play a particularly important role. The maintenance of these protected areas is of great importance in order to ensure their favourable conservation status.
