Earth Observation for the Federal Action Plan on Nature-based Solutions for Climate and Biodiversity (EO4Nature)

With scientific expertise, we develop innovative remote sensing approaches and create modular tools for precise and efficient environmental monitoring. This provides a reliable data foundation for implementing Nature-based Solutions for Climate and Biodiversity.

  • Development of user-friendly remote sensing tools that are freely accessible and tailored to the needs of end users.
  • Design of the tools in close collaboration with stakeholders to ensure customized solutions.
  • Integration and practical application of the tools in daily operations to enable a smooth transition into operational use.

The ANK

The Federal Action Plan on Nature-based Solutions for Climate and Biodiversity (ANK), introduced by the German government in 2023, establishes a clear timeline and specific measures to improve ecosystems in Germany and enhance their resilience and contribution to climate protection. The first seven fields of action of the ANK focus on key ecosystems and landscape functions:

Fields of Action
  1. Protection of intact peatlands and rewetting
  2. Near-natural water balance with vibrant rivers, lakes and floodplains
  3. Seas and coasts
  4. Wilderness and protected areas
  5. Forest ecosystems
  6. Soils as carbon stocks
  7. Nature-based climate action in settlement and transport areas
  8. The eighth field of action is dedicated to data collection, monitoring, modelling and reporting. Particularly, section 8.9 emphasizes the use of remote sensing to monitor the conditions and changes of these ecosystems as well as their contributions to climate protection.
